Biography:
Edward Stevens was born in Pirbright, Surrey, on 9 August 1896. He was the son and fourth child of Walter Oliver, a plasterer, and Emma (late Boylett
née Stevens). He had four brothers and three sisters.

Edward enlisted with The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment in one of the Territorial Battalions. In 1915, he was deployed to France with 1st
Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.

Edward Stevens was killed on 15 July 1916. His final resting place is unknown; his name, along with others of his regiment, appears on the Thiepval
Memorial, France.

Edward’s brother, John Stevens M.M., is also commemorated on the St John’s Memorial.


The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died
in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave.

The memorial was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in the presence of the President of France, on 1 August 1932.
